Yangyang International Airport in Dongho-ri, Sonyang-myeon, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do is set up as the alternative to Sokcho Airport -- which has inadequate facilities and geographically poor conditions – and Gengneung Airport, which fails to meet safety standards due to lack of sufficient landing pads. It offers air traffic services for purposes of, among others, balanced nationwide development and attraction of overseas tourists with its utilization of tourist attractions in the Yeongdong area such as Seoraksan and Geumgangsan.
As the base airport of the center of Yeongdong area and the aviation gateway of Gangwon-do tourism, the airport boasts of a passenger terminal that serves up to 3,170,000 people per year as well as parking facilities accommodating 498 vehicles.
